I'm about to buy a new hd, and was just wondering which would be good. The 60 gig Deskstar 60GXP,Western Digital 80GB, or the DiamondMax Plus 60. I also have 2 45 gig Deskstar 75GXP's and from reading the posts, people have been having problems with the 75GXP's but I have not. So maybe I should go for the Deskstar* 75GXP 75 gig ? Anyone have any problems with any of these drives ? Would really appreciate some help. Thanks.

The main difference between the 75GXP and the 60GXP would be the number of platters.

75GXP is 15GB per platter = 5 platters
60GXP is 20GB per platter = 3 platters

This means the 60GXP is cooler and quieter, albeit 15GB smaller.

Go for the 60GXPs. Don't go for the WB's (they fail often), or the Maxtors (mine aren't as fast as they should be).

I agree with Fatburger. Go with an IBM, specifically, the 60GXP line.

Both the IBM 60gxp and the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus are fast, quiet, and reliable. Either one will be good for you.

I'd set up a RAID 0 using two IBM 60GXP 40GB ATA100 7200rpm drives with the Promise FastTrack100 TX2 card. That will give you 80GB of double speed storage. Can get those hard drives now for 105.00 each from www.newegg.com and the controller card from them also for 75.00. Great company to deal with.
Good luck.

Actually you could set up a RAID 0+1 with your existing two drives by buying two more of the same type of drives you already have and using the FastTrack100 TX4 for RAID 0+1. That would give you the fast stripping speed and the redundancy safety feature. These setups do reformat your existing drives if you use these hard drives in them so you will have to back up your drives somehow before setting these up. Just a thought. Not sure you can even find those drives anymore. Check out www.promise.com for more info on RAID setups. Would be well worth it for the number of drives you have.
