Has anyone bought a player for way over what they were worth to help an
ailing club in the Conference or similar?

I've always wanted to help either Woking or Crawley Town with a decent bid
(£1-2m) for one of their players!

Anyone else done similar?

I wish someone would do that for my Bishop's Stortford side. How the board
expect me to build up the squad when I've got no transfer funds available,
I don't know.

Sign frees with no sign-on fees. Which means most likely since you are a conf. side, you will
have to resort to signing only some of the worst players around. But you may still get lucky.

I'm pretty much living on loans at the moment. Loans where I only pay a
small percentage of wages, if at any at all. The wage bill is right up
near the maximum limit, so I've not got much room there to play with
there. I sold all the players I thought I could do without, but they were
all on £50 a week wages, or something.

We're not doing badly, though. Seventh in the league in Mid-November
after a pretty indifferent start to the season.

Have a look at players released by some of the clubs - Click on World -->
Transfers then sort by 'To' and look at the Released players.

I've managed to pick up a couple of useful youngsters who've been given the
boot by clubs!

It's the wages that are the problem.

I did manage to get some young central defender to come and work for £50 a
week, but he's just emergency cover and - possibly - someone who might come
good in the future.

I'm drawing every game right now, most of them after having two goal leads
with half an hour to go. I really need to play with some sliders when I get
ahead like that. I'd put hard tackling on, but I'm getting four or five
yellow cards a game as it is.

Not quite the same, but in my working away game I did offer my home club a
friendly and paid them way over the odds.
