Hey,

I have a question about the i5 4690k.... My motherboard isn't working good anymore so instead of buying a new motherboard (there are not lots anymore) I want to upgrade my CPU as well... How good is the i5 4690k in comparison with the i5 2500k... I first wanted to buy the new i7 6700k but in my eyes its not worth to spend that amount of money for just gaming. Also how long will the i5 4690k be alright for gaming?

Solution
I'd go with the i5-4690 :)
I'm using the i7-4770K for the last 3 years and have no intention (see no practical reason) to change it in the next couple of years at least.
5 years is very long time. Get whatever you can comfortably afford now, and when you hit performance limit, upgrade the component.
Before you upgrade your monitor, you will need to upgrade your GPU first. If you buy 1440p or higher res monitor, i5 will be still fine as GPUs are not yet powerful enough to do the 120+ FPS on them. At least not the reasonably priced ones :)
the gaming performance of i5-4690K and i5-6600K is exactly the same on the same clock (say both overclocked to 4.5Ghz) and about 10% better than 2500K.
But any i5 is limiting the games performance at around 100-120FPS. in quite a few games you need an i7 to get higher FPS.
If you have a 144Hz monitor with GPU like GTX 1070 or GTX 1080, you will be better with i7 and it is totally worth the investment.
in case of 60Hz monitor or/and less powerful GPUs, i5 is fine and going to be fine for the next few years.

It's all about the price... I was looking at the i5 6600k/i7 6700k but I also have to upgrade my RAM which as for now are not worth the upgrade/price (ddr4). So that is why I was considering the older haswell CPU. In the future (5years) I want to build the ultimate gameing PC so untill that day comes I don't want to spend a lot of money. I am actually still happy with my i5 2500k (no oc) it's just my mobo which isnt working right.

Would a upgrade to a i7 4790k be worth?

I'm just answering the question.
May be OP have a great deal on i5-4690 + MB + RAM. I'd say if he can get them for under 280$ it's great.
A good i5-6600K + Z170MB + 16GB DDR4 RAM is 380$ on a good sale for MB and usually 440$ (at least for something i'd put in my computer).

I am using the GTX 970. I don't play on a 144hz screen but that might change in the future ( like I said over 5 years or so )

Well I have to pay around €500 for the new skylake. A new mobo and i5 4690k is just €230

I will upgrade everything in a few years. Haha but till that day comes I really don't wanna spend any money on my computer... Now I have to because my mobo isn't working great. But if the i5 4690k atleast will be a good CPU for the coming 5 years I don't have to be worried.
