When buying a mobo how can I be sure that it will work out of the box with the cpu without needing to update the bios?
I really want to avoid asking for an older cpu just for updating the bios..

By making sure the CPU you have supports whatever chipset the mobo uses out of the box? If you are for example buying a i7 7700k and plan to put it in a Z170 mobo you need to make sure the Z170 mobo has a BIOS that supports kaby lake. If you have a Z270 mobo no worries the 7700k will work with Z270 out of the box.

If you are wondering how to tell if a Z170 mobo will support kaby lake out of the box before buying it, you likely cant unless the seller advertises it as such.
