Buying my first mechanical keyboard for gaming just wondering what Cherry Mx switch you would recommend for me to get as someone who has never used a mechanical keyboard before. I am planning on getting the Corsair K70 RGB, they do red, blue and brown switches which is best for a new mechanical keyboard user
Thanks

Well, telling what is the best Cherry MX switches is saying what is the best band. It's matter of tastes. The difference between the colors are the hardness of the switches (how much pressure you need to do in order to get down the key), tactile feel (if they "bump" when activated) and clicky noise.

I bought a K95 with Red switches before, learned that I was not a fan of red switches. Feels a little too mushy for me because the lack of a click and the springiness. I LOVED the typing experience of Blue switches, but none of the keyboards at the store near me (Frys) had it. Ended up going with Brown switches on a Coolermaster keyboard, and I am very happy with it.

When they say Red switches are good for gaming, what they mean is that you repeat keystrokes fastest with these because they require the least amount of travel for the keystroke to be accepted. When they say Blue switches are the best for typing, what they mean is that you have to push it all the way past a point where it "clicks" audibly, and you also feel the click which gives you good tactile feedback. Brown switches also have to be pushed beyond a certain point and you will get both an audible and tactile "click," but it will be less pronounced than with Blue keys.

Bottom line: In my opinion, Brown is probably the best for most people, and better for gaming than Blue. Blue is great if you type a lot and don't care about noise. Red I wouldn't go with at all.

I like black because I can double tap quickly if I want to, but it feels better than red. The difference between black and red is that black requires slightly more force to actuate than a membrane keyboard, while reds require less, other than that they're non-tactile and non clicky. Of course, the K70 doesn't offer blacks, so that doesn't matter much. Out of what the K70 offers, I would go for brown, as it's quieter than the blue, and to me it feels better.
