So I pre-ordered the Pimax 8k on their kickstarter page, it requires a GTX 1070 or better but I currently own the GTX 970.

I have the budget to buy a GTX 1080 ( not TI though ) but a GTX 1070 is enough.
Also the Pimax ships in January / February 2018 so my other option is to wait for the Volta or another video card to release.
I heard the GTX 1070 TI is also coming?!

1080? 1070? 1070 TI? Wait?!

PS: Should I just buy the cheapest 1080/1070 or is there a noticeable difference between lets say MSI and EVGA?

By waiting you can try your current card. While its below min spec. You are likely to be able to run a variety of vr aps fine but at a reduced quality/performance. If you are getting a green result in steamvr performance test (consistant) should be okay. Free program demos are great for testing.

With GPU say evga vs asus etc best to look for reviews/benchmarks to compare performances. To see about pros vs cons on mfgrs. As with what said above waiting will likely lead to price drops & gives time to save. The longer you can hold out the better card for price.
Alright, listen up. It all depends on what you want. If you are on a budget, then what I would do, is wait til the 1070 TI comes out, then buy the 1070, because it will drop in price. But that means, that you wont be able to play games on high/ultra settings. You might be stuck with medium (wich is fine for me personally). But VR is constantly changing, so if I where you, I would save up to the GTX 1080, and be ''secure'' for a couple of years.

And yes, there is a BIG difference between cards. Some are 8 GB, some are 6 GB, some are slower, some are faster. Try to take the cheapest, and the most expensive, read the specs, and then find something in between. You should be looking for things like : GPU speed, GPU Clock Speed Boost, and GPU shader clock and memory speed. Read some reviews on the different cards.

If you are going for a GTX 1080, I would recommend ASUS RoG Strix GTX 1080 OC, or the cheaper MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G.

Hope this helps :)
