Looking to buy to 6950's to welcome in BF3 and wondering how to tell if they are unlockable (buying at newegg as always).
Thanks.
Jaguar has a point-the reference design 6950's dried up a while ago. There are a certain number of non-reference cards that it MIGHT be possible to mod, but no guarantees. I've heard the msi TFIII is able to unlock. There are a couple of other cards as well. Here's one that might: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102951
Of course all these are out of stock currently at newegg. Which means you'll be lucky if you find one that unlocks.
What you want to look for is cards that have a dual BIOS option. This way you won't brick your card if you mod one BIOS and it doesn't work...
I wouldn't worry about it because your chances of unlocking a 2GB Radeon HD 6950 to a HD 6970 is ZERO. AMD quickly changed the design once it became known that the original reference design 2G Radeon HD 6950 could be unlocked. You missed the boat by about 4 or 5 months.

Good luck, I hope you find one that works.
