So I'm in the market for Windows 7 fresh download on a brand new PC that I am building. I will be upgrading the motherboard shortly (In four months) after windows 10 comes out. At that point I will be both changing motherboards and downloading Windows 10 for free (hopefully). My first question is:

What version of Windows 7 Home premium should I buy?
There is the OEM, the "FULL Package" (with 2 disks I think), there is the "multiple Liscence" package which might be necessary for me as I am replacing a motherboard which windows counts as a "new computer".

Where should I go to get this version that you recommend?
There are many online offerings from amazon /ebay style sites (Which I do not fully trust for this type of buying). Where did you get yours and where to avoid buying from.

Will OEM work for switching motherboards?

Will OEM give me full access to Windows 10 for free?

What is the Price that others payed and are you disapointed because of that? What is an appropriate price?

Note *I do not particularly care about legality as long as I receive a legitimate copy of Windows 10.

Thank you for helping this first time windows buyer! 😀

OEM is just a name for as people buy a pc you get windows for free.
These versions are called OEM but they are full versions with a licence key so it`s yours and you can use it on your next system to.
And you don`t get a free copy of Windows 10 if you buy Windows 7 after the launch of W10.
It`s only for those people who already got a copy.

Solution

Well, on the first topic I read from multiple sources that windows identifies a system as "another computer" when the motherboard is replaced. Then I found this on Microsoft's page:

"Use of this OEM System Builder Channel software is subject to the terms of the Microsoft OEM System Builder License. This software is intended for pre-installation on a new personal computer for resale. This OEM System Builder Channel software requires the assembler to provide end user support for the Windows software and cannot be transferred to another computer once it is installed. To acquire Windows software with support provided by Microsoft please see our full package "Retail" product offerings."

So I believe I will need a second licence for a mobo swap.
I am in the United States by the way, so yes the price is $95 online for either a download or physical media.

I plan on upgrading my motherboard a bit after 10 comes out. My question is will switching from windows 7 to 10 at the same time as switching motherboards fool the system into letting me use the new motherboard without a new licence.(While still allowing for free windows 10 upgrade)
Yes it is a single computer.
Thanks for your response bro!

If you are switching the motherboard before the Windows 10 upgrade, yes, you'd need another Windows 7 license.
After the Windows 10 upgrade, unknown.

That is why I recommended not changing the motherboard until after the Win10 upgrade.

I've not seen any "multi license" packs for Windows 7 in the last couple of years.
Nor does MS sell 'Retail' Windows 7 license anymore. OEM only.

OH ! No one had told me about Microsoft not even offering the retail version any longer. Looks like it's OEM system builder for me! Thanks for the tip about switching motherboards after though, I understand what you're saying now. This helped me a bunch actually...Thanks!

I would give you best answer now, but I will wait for more opinions on my topics first. See ya 😀

Say I bought Windows 7 OEM in mid May (a couple of month before the launch of 10) for my newly built desktop, would I still be within the parameters to receive windows 10 for free?

Thank you for your posts!

Yes. Any current owner of Win 7/8/8.1 as of the date Win 10 is released can upgrade to Win 10 for free. Any time within a year after that release.

If you wait until August (theoretical) next year, you'll have to pay for Win 10.
If you buy Win 7 after the July (theoretical) release date of Win 10...unknown.
