Hello,

It's been over 10 years since the releases of Race into Space. In the
recent years I haven't found the time to try and rework the source
myself so it will run properly on modern hardware. I've spoken my
buddy Fritz Bronner, creator of Liftoff! and BARIS and talked him into
the idea of releasing the source of this game under some sort of open
source license.

Is there any interest in the release of this code? It was originally
written in C for the Borland 3.1 compiler under DOS. There is some
minimal inline assembly including that fading code that keeps it from
running on the newer machines unless you run with DOSBox.

Is there anyone interested in leading such an effort? I will provide
as much help as possible along with all the source to the utilities to
create both the disk and cd version of the game.

Any suggestions of an open source license that prevents the
distribution of a resulting binary?

As part of the code release we won't be releasing any of the game
data, so you'd have to find copies of that elsewhere. The source
won't include the drawing or midi libraries since we don't have any
rights to distribute that.

Thanks,

Michael McCarty

I tried to talk to him about creating a PBM version, but when it came to
talk about money, he suddenly stopped talking.

I'm *still* interested.

At least over here on sci.space.*, there is a great deal of interest
in just this.

Goodness, I'd forgotten that game... took me ages to manage to build it
without going bankrupt. A lot of juggling needed to play that one...
(and I can't help but suspect a glitch in the man-hours calculations
somewhere)

[Was anything meant to happen after you'd "won" - ie, built it
sucessfully? I'd assumed so, but apparently not...]

Well, this is a rather old thread but I would LOVE to see BARIS updated /
re-released. I still enjoy the old orginal BARIS quite often, much more so
than any other 10 year old software 😉

I hate using Google groups for this, but my news server is acting all
wonky. I'd appreciate it if you would contact me about this, Mr.
McCarty. I'm a Software Engineer who works primarily in C, and would
like to do what I can to help move this project forward. I've enjoyed
playing BARIS since its release, and would love to see others enjoy it
as well.

Please contact me at "mfunke AT cellularspecialties DOT com" at your
earliest convenience. Thank you.

I enjoy hearing that BARIS is still enjoyed.

A few people have contacted me about restarting development on BARIS,
so I went ahead and created a sourceforge project and released most of
the source under the GPL.

Along with this source I'm hopeful that some developers will assist and
take the reins and get this ported to something other than DOS. As a
part of this I am releasing some of the utilities used to create the
non-graphic game data such as mission sequencing, failure modes, and
whatever else someone may ask for.

We haven't started anything concrete yet, but the project can be found
at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/raceintospace
