Hello everyone,

I've recently installed a brand new MSI GTX 970 and while playing GTA 5 I noticed a buzzing noise when MSAA x8 is activated, also noticed when running kombuster after a few minutes. It sounds like it is coming from the PSU however I am not sure. Please could anyone advise me as to what the issue could be? My PSU is the EVGA 500B which should be plenty for the GTX 970.

Solution
I don't know if that would of solved it, I am curious though, anything the cover could of been touching or pushing into something else? or loose enough to where it made noise? Unlikely but things to think about.
Are you sure its not the gpu? Gpu's can make a lot of conductor noise when they are being pushed hard or running at a very high frame rate. It could be coil whine from the psu as well the evga 500B's aren't the best quality so that is certainly a possibility. Coil whine isn't necessarily a bad thing but it can be depending on what is causing it.

It doesn't sound like any coil whine I've heard before. It sounds more mechanical, I was thinking that it may be the fan of my PSU when under load? I bought the EVGA 500B after reading that it was a good PSU! Are you saying it wasn't a wise choice?

CPU: AMD FX-6300
RAM: 8GB G-Skill Ripjawz X

I also have a cheap HDD and a cheap mobo, also a TX3 Evo CPU cooler, I doubt these matter much though. Thanks for the reply!

The 500B is a decent psu for the price, there are certainly much worse psu's but its not the best quality out there. Are you absolutely sure its coming from the psu? The fact that it does it when you use 8x MSAA makes me think its coming from the gpu not psu.

You make a good point. The reason I believe it to be the PSU is that I cannot physically see any irregular motion in the fans or feel any vibrations from the card when it makes the noise. If I do manage to confirm the card is at fault would this be worthy of an RMA? Is it worth the hassle? I don't mind having MSAA off. Thanks for all the help!

I've only had it for a few months, so should be in tip top condition. And no I haven't, I shall do this now and report back. Thanks for the help also!

Currently running a stress test with the PSU outside of the case, waiting for the noise to pop up. Before taking the PSU out I tried to re-create the noise once more with MSAA at x8 (GTA 5), and it didn't seem to make the noise. The only difference is that I'd overclocked core clock and memory clock slightly in MSI afterburner, also increased the maximum power limit to 110%. Could that have solved the issue? It doesn't make sense that it would cure the problem though.

I'm starting to think this is the case. I can hear slight coil whine from the card, and that's definitely a separate noise. Currently the stress test is at 800 seconds, and last time the noise came in at around 250 seconds. Probably was an issue with the fan hitting the guard, it seems to have sorted itself out now though. Thank you for all the replies!
