Bypass onboard audio with USB?

Staticshock fried my mobo's onboard audio. I only receive left audio now!

If I were to get a USB to 3.5mm jack, could I bypass the audio and get balance, or even with the USB converter I'll still use my onboard?

Please and thanks, I appreciate your answers.

Yeah that will work. You can also find some better quality ones from Asus or others too if you want. I use a cheap one though for my speakers when I'm not using my USB headset. Works great.
Not sure on USB to 3.5mm, but I know USB headphones bypass the onboard. Least, I'm pretty sure they do. Maybe it depends on the system... I know you can get USB soundcards, and DACs and stuff. Not sure if you need something like that or not though... Maybe it depends on where on the board the static got it.

Looks like there's a little card in there, so ya, I'd say that would work. Not 100% though. Give it a couple hours or so and see if some one with more knowledge than me chimes in. Happens sometimes. On the other hand, doesn't look too expensive, you could try it. Maybe send it back if it doesn't work.

Yes that will work for casual audio but if you are a bit more tedious (listening music or like sound effects in games) i would recomend https://www.asus.com/us/Sound-Cards/Xonar-U7-MKII/ or http://www.kitguru.net/components/soundcard/jon-martindale/asus-xonar-u5-5-1-usb-sound-card-review/ or http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-x-fi-surround-5-1-pro. Those usb cards has audiophil SNR ratios (very very high sound quality) and it will bypass onboard. Another thing, internal cards (PCI or PCIE cards) the quality of teh sound is influence by the internal interferences because internal cards can pick motherboard interferences.

I would obviously get something of better quality than the image I sourced. As for sticking out-- it doesn't bother me at all. What bothers me is left audio, haha. I don't know too much about setting sound up with a sound card so plug and play is ideal with a USB to 3.5mm, if it has a card to covert audio.

I will most certainly weigh all options and have patience with responses. This fiasco happened about a month ago so I'm not impatient. I'd like to do the best option, but budget is a big concern since I'm a student.

Thanks so far for the responses.
