Hi there. I recently just got a new desktop PC about a week ago.
I downloaded the programs I use on a day-to-day basis and nothing more. (games included).

However I was surprised to see that when I open "My PC" my C: drive shows as 3/4 of the way full! http://prntscr.com/a9wh9o
Why is this?

My laptop that I've been using for 3~ years has not even used half the space that my desktop PC shows it has used. My laptop has everything I have on this computer, and much more on it.

There has to be something wrong. I'm sure there is a fix to this but I don't know what to do or what steps to take to fix this.

Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thank you for any help :)

Solution
if a prebuild the chances are its partitioned off with a c & d drive
this is standard for dell/hp/compaq/lenovo etc.

open windows start menu, type disk management - press return
post a screen grab of the disk management box

We need more information about your hardware. If you have a link to the exact system you bought, please post it.

It shows your C drive as being 150GB in size. Is that how big your hard drive is supposed to be?
It shows you have installed 100GB of stuff (including Windows itself). Is that correct?

WinDirStat can help visualize where your space is going.

What games have you installed? Games such as gta 5 can take up to 60 gigabytes of data on the hard drive and are probably the cause of the filling. I honestly think you have just filled it up, it is very easy to do, especially with games and program files, so try installing software onto another drive (I presume that 150gb is an ssd) It is probably the case that your laptop had a LOT more capacity than your current machine, but I could be wrong.

Ah. You are all right. Thank you!
I wasn't looking at my actual GB values but rather the % space that was taken up. I'm not a computer person so i don't even know how much GB a computer drive should have so that is my bad.

My computer does have a "partitioned off" C & D drive. 150 GB avaliable in my C: drive and 780 GB in my D drive. My laptop does have much more space than 150GB because it is all in one drive. (Again i was not looking at the GB values >.<)

Thanks for your guys' comments.

On a side note: How do I allocate data from my C: drive to my D drive? http://prntscr.com/a9x3k2
Do I just fill up my C: drive? Again I'm not very good with computer stuff so I have no idea how this stuff works. Sorry if I sound stupid, and again thanks for your help. :)

when you install an app or game from now on you will always have an option on where to install it if you click on advanced or similar.
install the majority of your stuff on the d drive instead.

Or you can extend your c drive onto your d drive if you like??
Let us know if you need information regarding that & what actual os youre running.

I personally prefer the 2 seperate partitions on a pc that only has 1 physical drive.

A little complicated for a novice though.
that 50gb or so left should be enough for all documents/pics etc.
Id just extend the c partition as far as possible personally.

If you haven't put anything in the D drive yet, I would suggest deleting the D drive and making your C drive take up all of the space. Having the two partitions is needlessly complex.

Go to Start, put Disk Management in the Search field. It should come up with something that says "Create and format hard disk partitions". Click on that.
Right click on the D drive and choose Delete Volume.
Right click on the C drive and choose Extend Volume. Make it take up the maximum amount of space. After that you can keep installing stuff to the C drive.
