Win XP home-Sp2
Sorry, if this is a stupid question. I am kinda new in the pc world.
I have 2 pc's that are the same brand, year, etc. one I use at work. One at
home.
I happened to notice that the one that I use at work has an extra disk or
drive when i go to 'my computer'. I used to see the Local drive "c" there.
Now, I see an additional local drive "F' as well. How did that get there? I
have never added any extra things to my work pc unless it was software
programs from the internet.
This is my guess. Perhaps, since I have more files stored at my work pc,
then automatically I got an extra drive to use?? something like that? here
are the specs on my pc.
Dell Dimension 2300
Pent 4 CPU 1.80 GHz
1.79 GHz, 256 MG RAM
THanks for your help

Possibilities include a virtual disk drive or a network share. If you right
click 'F' and select properties, what does it tell you about the drive?

No, that's not possible. I can't tell what it is from the info you've
provided, but here's a guess: have you plugged in a camera or USB thumb
drive, and didn't realize that these would be seen as a disk drive?

This my have been done by your system admin. We automatically map
drives at log on for our uses. Check and see what's on drive F
they may have redirected your mailbox or My documents to a
network drive.

Has the C drive been partitioned?

Rick, unknown, Ken, & or gls858:
Thanks to all who responded. I right clicked on the Local disk "F" drive and
saw that it is a FAT file system. My Local disk "C" drive is an NTFS file
system. I am not a whole lot knowlegeble in these things. Let me tell you
what I do know that has changed lately. hope this helps.
1- I recently defragmented & disk clean-up ( could that be why 'unknown'
said if the drive had been partitioned?)
2- I recently installed sp2 from a cd-rom
However, I did the same thing to my home pc. nothing has changed in my
Computer drive on that pc.
3- Ken, I plug in cameras by USB. I dont have a thumb drive. anytime I plug
in a usb or other thing, it shows up as removable F,G,H, etc. remember, on
my computor, it shows C & F as local disk drives

4- gls858: You asked, "This my have been done by your system admin. We
automatically map drives at log on for our uses. Check and see what's on
drive F
they may have redirected your mailbox or My documents to a
network drive."
SORRY, can't understand your question. we have 4 user accounts and all 4
have computer administrative priveleges. I never use the ADminustrator
account for anything. just my own.
I appreciate if you can let me know what I can do to fix this, if its
something that needs to be fixed. thanks for your concern.

Hi,

I suspect that Ken is on the right track with this. The camera's memory card
is treated as a thumb drive, but the system has mislabeled this a local
drive, which is why you see it all the time. Are you able to actually access
it?

I think that I am able to access it. THis is what I see on this Local
Disk(F) properties: FAT
the usual 4 tabs (general. tools, hardware, sharing)> in the general tab,
there is that pink circle with a pie shaped portion of blue USED space of
6.85 MB. FREE space shows 24.4 MB. under this circle, it says drive F. It
also says that the capacity is 31.2 MB. Of course it lists it in bytes as
well.
Under the HARDWARE tab, there I see my Cd,DVD, and floppy drives,Under
TYpes.
BUT, I have two disk drives under TYPE .
first one= Maxtor 6LO40J2
second one= OEI-USB CF/SM/SD/MS USB device.
SO, i think the picture may be getting clearer. I just dont know what steps
are needed to fix this and HOw to fix it.
The one thing that I recently did, I remember, is install the 'autofix.exe'
because my scanner wizzard was not recognizing my camera. that fix, fixed
the problem fine. could this have something to do with it. Please help, if
you can. thanks! !

Hi,

Could you export and post this key in the registry for me:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to each key (do this one
at a time). Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then
save to the desktop. Once you have saved both keys, close the registry
editor. Right-click one of the saved files on the desktop, choose edit, it
should open in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to
this post and click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the
contents. Repeat for the other saved key, then send the post for
examination.

Oooooooooops. Sorry Rick.
I posted on another user account's in outlook express, using Marcy instead
of MR. Still, it is on this same computer in question. I will try to be more
careful next time. So Marcy & MR are on same pc. just forgot to switch
users.

THanks RIck- Well, the my printer is plugged into my pc, all the time, by
USB. But, as of almost a month, I hooked up a second pc by USB; but it is
connected to my DSL modem box>then to the 2nd pc. WHat is left to do. I am
sorry that this is such a pain. But, I hope to get this resolved. Will I be
able to fix this?? with the help of you, Ken, or another?
