I wanted to upgrade my desktop P5E3 Premium MOBO and Q8200 processor running Win 7 Pro. I reused all the HDD (C, D, G, M) and burners. I installed the P8Z77, i5 3550, 8 Gig RAM, and GTX650 Ti video. POST single beep was OK, C:\ is recognized but will not open and Windows goes into repair mode. Tried to boot with only C: connected, and it shows C:\, D:\, and X:\. What is that all about?

Solution
You can launch Win7 installation and then select "repair an existing installation" during the wizard. That way, you will not lose your programs/settings, but you will lose the updates.
You might have to reactivate the OS after that. Keep your key handy. If this is an OEM version that came with the system, you might need to contact Microsoft, because the key was bound to the motherboard.
Because you use the old HDD with win7 on the new MB, the hardware is different so the PC boot to the repair mode and try to load the drivers for the new MB.
And maybe you have partitions on the old HDD + card reader? + DVD/CD?.
If you change the new MB, you are better reinstall the win7 before you save all the your data into other HDD.
