C partion and restore disk

Does the Dell restore disk allow restoring the o/s to a partion other
than the C partion ??

If you're referring to the Windows installation CD, you can install to any
partition you wish. But you'll only be making trouble for yourself.

Installation disk ?? I understand Dell does not ship a proper
installation/system disk anymore. I am referring to the RESTORE disk.

and why would I be making trouble for myself ?

Dell ships a full Windows installation CD. In addition, some models have a
recovery partition that erases your hard disk and restores it to the way it
was when it left the factory.

Two installations of Windows on the same computer will eventually land you
in trouble. This is a maneuver sometimes used for recovering data when less
extreme measures have failed.

Thank you for your answer. I had understood that Dell now only ships
with a restore disk (disk image)

At present I a am running a computer with 2 instances of NT4 installed
and 1 instance of Win98 installed on separate partions. 1 NT4 is my main
one for work, the other NT4 install is for testing software, and of
course win98 is for games. Contrary to you assertion that this will
cause problems, it has made things much easier. For this setup to cause
problems.. well.. I can't really think how it could, even for neophytes.

My 4600 came with both the Windows CD and recovery partition. However,
I can't seem to get to the recovery partition. I've tried hitting
Ctrl + F11.

Someone else has already posted the link to Dban but it's effectively a
secure low-level non-operating system dependant erasing
tool..............boot from floppy and it'll kill absolutely any trace of
data present on any hard drive it finds.

Of course, if you're in the UK, the Govt here are now looking at banning
such software or if they find you have it present they've made it clear the
presumption will be that you have used it to erase kiddie porn or other
nasties on your pc.

And, no, I'm not making it up.

My "modus operandum" on any new pc is always to delete any partitions and
start from the ground up, creating an o/s partition and then a couple of
others.

This time was no different.........I got rid of the hidden partition in the
end as I've described but it was a stubborn rascal!

It puzzled me why it was there actually because Dell are still shipped (here
in the UK anyway) with a full OS CD.

I believe it's F11 on boot-up but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

On my 8400 it's F12 to get into the boot up options, it also has a hard
drive analyzer in there. The other choice is F2 which gets me into the BIOS
setup.
