Cable management questions

Hi all,

I just completed my first PC build about 10 days ago. Everything works great so far, so I'm absolutely thrilled, but I had a few questions about the cables.

1.) I did order some velcro ties for cable management, but when I was building, I just used the twist ties that came with my case/monitor (i.e. not like the cheap twist ties from the grocery store). I only ended up needing two to keep things organized decently well, and now that it's all built, I don't particularly want to open it up again and potentially jostle anything out of place. Do you think the twist ties are okay, or would it be better to put in the velcro ones or some zip ties?

2.) I ended up putting most of my cables (particularly the ones for my optical drive/SSD/HDD) behind my motherboard. As a result, it's a bit crowded back there, and it was a little tight putting my case's back end on, but it closed without too much trouble. Is that okay to leave as it is? The cables seem pretty durable, but if it's not good to have them like that, I could try to find space somewhere else (though again, I'd rather not open up the case if I don't need to. I'm a little paranoid about breaking something after putting so much hard work and love into this machine, haha :) )

Thanks again for all the help!

Solution
1. Twist ties are ok and perfectly fine. You could use shoelaces and be perfectly fine.

2. Don't worry about the tight fit of the cables, as long as no metal is buckling under the pressure, the cables will be fine. They're meant for that so don't sweat it. You sound like you know what you're doing. 😀
Twist ties are fine as long as you are certain they will hold. It may not look as clean as zip ties or velcro ties but let's be honest, 99% of the time you won't see the inside of your case. If I were you, I would just leave things as is until the next time you upgrade or change components, at which point you can replace the ties.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear this :) That takes quite a bit off my mind, thanks!

One last note -- I should probably also mention that one of the twist ties is a little close to some of my components. I had to tie the case fan cable to keep it from getting caught up in the fan/cpu cooler/mobo. It sounds like things are probably still okay though, right? (i.e. don't need to worry about component damage or shorting anything out?) It's near both my GPU and mobo, but not touching either. (actually, currently the fan cable/twist tie are basically sitting on the edge of my wireless card)

You shouldn't have anything to worry about, you're only risking a short if metal is touching metal. Being close to each other isn't really a risk unless you've got tesla coil amounts of voltage running through there, which you don't! So no worries. :)

OH, and let me offer some advice regarding cable management. And this is especially nice if you've got a side window looking into your computer, look for corrugated plastic loom tubing. It's fantastic for guiding collections of wire around inside the PC case, you can get it in many colors as well so it looks nice too!
