We took over an apartment lease with an ongoing Internet contract so we are using the modem left for us with our own wireless router. However, we are unable to connect to the Internet with the router nor a direct Ethernet connect from the modem to a MacBook (2009). What needs to be done in this case so there is connection with a different router than the modem previously had and a new set of computers?

We've tried to go to the settings page and while it shows all of the modem's stats, we do not have admin login info and are unable to change anything.

Solution

Usually all you need to do to get the modem to assign an IP address to a new device is unplug it's power and then plug it back in. If that doesn't work the modem may be faulty.
