cable modem router combos and external routers

i have a cable modem router combo and a wireless extender, both netgear brand. i am having problems with gaming because of the placement of the routers and where my room is located with my pc. i was wondering if i could somehow disable the wireless portion of the cable modem router and hook up a standard router via ethernet. that way i only have one router, and could position it with a long ethernet cord to get better connection for my rig.
