Hey guys,
Have a cable connection with optus, live in Victoria, Australia.
Modem and router are very old looking to upgrade.
According to my brother, they are also effectively 'bottle-necking' my connection by crashing and disconnecting when overloaded.
Have an over 3 megabyte per second connection not megabit I've triple checked trust me.
I don't really have a budget on a new modem router but it needs to cable not ADSL, otherwise I can't use it. Can you recommend something that will support heavy usage eg. Netflix, torrenting online gaming and wireless devices such as phones connected and being used simultaneously.

You need to confirm what speed you are paying for from your ISP. Then run Speedtest.net via connected directly to your modem via a wire. If you are getting what you are paying for, then upgrading will not help anything.

If you have less than what you are paying for, that you should consider an upgrade. In general, you need to start with checking with your ISP as they usually have a list of approved hardware for your connection. In terms of cable modems, you should look for a DOCSIS 3.0 one as that is the current standard.
