If I follow everything "I've been told..." would take me to the poor house.

Does your area have electrical problems, thunderstorms? then yes, a surge proctor is a cheap insurance. You want something even nicer so your equipment can power down gracefully? UPS, battery needs to be replaced every few years.

Live in Sunny California? probably don't need nutting.
