Cable or HDD problem?

I have 2 hard drives on my home PC.The first one is working fine but the other has caused some problems over the last few years.First, it started to make strange noises (like an engine that is accelerating and then stops, followed by a noise similar to click or a scratch).I changed twice the SATA cable, but the the problem still stood. The hard drive became slow at writing movies/games in and out, so I disconnected the SATA cable and left it only with the power cable plugged in.The hard drive disappeared from the list of my devices, however, the strange noise continued.Yesterday I removed the power cable too and the issue finally stopped.Any idea what the problem might be?Is it one of the cables or it is the hard drive that is gone?I would really appreciate.

Solution
That is a dying hard drive. Since you can still read from it, get any critical data off of it now. Save it elsewhere.

It will fail, sooner rather than later.
