Hi,
I'm currently picking parts for a desktop build after years of using laptops due to travel and uni requirements, and would like to run the build I've come up with past this community.
For reference I'm upgrading from an Asus A55V laptop that served me well until the GPU or mobo decided it was time to mess with me (can't pinpoint the problem, GPU often doesn't show in device list and case fan gets stuck at max rpms during boot)
The main uses of the build will be CAD work, simulation and some gaming. When I say gaming, though, I don't expect to run the latest flavor of shooter at 60fps on ultra, but not having to drop LoL to medium as I'm forced to now would be nice. I play mostly EVE Online and LoL, plus some RTS and grand strategy.
My current build idea:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4590
(http://ark.intel.com/products/80815/Intel-Core-i5-4590-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary
(http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H97M%20Anniversary/)
RAM: Kingston Fury Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
(http://www.kingston.com/en/hyperx/memory/fury)
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5''
HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
(http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=770#Tab3)
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 2GB
(http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5369)
Case: Cooler Master Silencio 352
(http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mini-tower-silencio-series/silencio352/)
PSU: 500W EVGA 100-W1-0500-KR
(http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=100-W1-0500-KR)
I'm reusing several old monitors I have around for this, as well as other peripherals like mouse and keyboard. This mostly means a GPU that can be made to work with VGA through adapters is needed.
My thoughts right now:
- I'm concerned that GPU is a bit too much for what I usually play, and may downgrade to a GTX 750 Ti.
- The motherboard is an H97 only because I can't be sure amazon will ship an H81 with updated BIOS (to use the 4th gen CPU), and I don't want the hassle of going to a PC store and being ripped off for the small favor of flashing it.
- I'd go AMD, but I'm worried the performance just isn't there. for reference I currently use an i7-3610QM (laptop CPU) and it kinda works, but a bit more speed wouldn't go amiss. Multithreading isn't a main requirement for me, so i5 should do, unless you can suggest an AMD solution.
- A non-stock CPU cooler is a nice-to-have as I live in a hot climate, but I'd rather see how much space I have left first and buy one after measuring.
- The case could be downgraded to a Zalman T3 or T4 to squeeze out some money, if needed.
I'd welcome input on the CPU+mobo side first and foremost, and on the GPU and PSU second.
I intend to buy it sometime this month or next, and live in the EU, much to my chagrin when finding US price quotes.
I've already learned a lot from this community by lurking, so I also wanted to say thanks
