Im trying to choose what graphics card to get for a PC that will be used to help with college work doing Games development. i will be using CAD software but also would like to use the pc for gaming as im spending £1000+ on it, so should i get a CAD grpahics card or a Gaming graphics card?

Depends application.
If you are using OpenGL software, you would be better off with Quadro or Firepro. You may want to consider a Mac Pro in that case.
