Is there perhaps some kind of apprenticeship or internship Tom's has? I know a fair bit above average, but not sure if I know enough to be writing articles without catching heat.

No, I'm afraid there isn't such a program. However, your concern about catching heat--that's partly why there are editors. Also, catching heat is just part and parcel of this gig. 😉

How does this work? Would I receive hardware to write about?

If you review hardware, yes. But it's not like you get free stuff to keep. Sometimes the gear goes back to the company that sends it. Sometimes we hang onto it in our labs for later comparison testing.
