Call of Duty crashes with Radeons

Never had a system problem with COD till I plugged in my radeon 9800 pro. After a few mins of playing the system hangs and have to reboot. On the other hand Max Payne 2 and Jedi Academy works great. I did grab the cat 3.10 wich supposedly fixed this issue and still persists. Did rip/reinstall the game too with no luck. WTF?

You have a Geforce installed before? If so, those drivers like to hang around and make life miserable for the ATI drivers. You'll have to get an uninstall tool to remove them...go to http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ and get the det remover...hopefully that will help.

Another thing you wanna check is to turn fast write off...some people experience a problem with that.

I have also found that my VPU recover causes my system to hang. I deselect this and I'm ok. Just some things you can try.

Your post topic is a lie. You should have said 'Call of Duty Crashes with MY Radeon'. As other people have said you probably still have remnants of the nVidia drivers still left on youre computer. Use driver cleaner to get rid of them and then try again. If that doesnt work It's either some other driver or a hardware issue (possibly PSU), theres nothing wrong with Call of Duty.

Get COD patch, that's probably what you read about. There is a Patch for ATI cards from the creators. Not new news. Simply keep your games up to date. Pretty simple really. BTW, similar problems with nV. Not a very well coded game it appears, despite it being fun and popular (not my kind of game though).

Yeah Im familiar with the VPU recovery glitches and always have that thing off. There will always be points in the game that may put a heavy load on it suddenly and that damned feature will hang your system up a moment to reset your card. Never works anyways. I will get that driver cleaner thing just to be on the safe side.

Maybe you need to start opening your options to other places than THG. Just do a google search for this issue and you will get tons of hits.

This game is great but its stability needs much improvement. I just hope that the patch that activition will eventually put out will resolve the game's stability problem. I dont doubt that I have lingering nvidia crap on my rig that would play a contributing role but I seriously doubt that it will fix all. The random crashes are just one of the persistent issues with COD. Not to metion the odd loud sounds I would hear if EAX is on. This game needed more time in the beta field before release.

Just logically speaking all other games with more intense requirements work fine on this rig so to conclude COD is just a bigger b!tch in its requirements.

Totally agree with you and I am fimaliar with the issues with nvidia but those issues are not as consistent and persistent as the ones with ATI. Not to mention the sound glitches that occur with EAX on. Single player side seems to me ok but Multiplayer really needed more work.

However You mentioned a patch. Are you talking about the ATI patch or one from Activision? I know of the ATI hotfix but that was incorperated with the Cat 3.10 which I have. I am not aware of one that was released for this game already.

Is your rig still OCed so much and have you tried it at default speeds? Your ram settings are aggressive for 220fsb.

Dont really go too far as for the OC settings but no other game does this crap and My machine is running very cool. I could make my rig go much higher but there is no performance gain past wat I have now so the extra heat is worthless. However I did run at stock setting for both system and AGP and hell I even underclocked them both with no luck. Even if my rig OC settings were at fault, I would more likely through the game out before I give up the settings.

I saw a recent patch from Activision listed on [H] or another one of the main review sites (maybe nVnews) a few days ago. This was in addition to the HotFix. It's not JUST a patch for the Radeons, but to address mutliple issues.
I think this also fixed some HQ and Multiplayer issues as well.

I didn't bookmark it, just took not of it.

BTW, wasn't there already Patch #1 released in Nov?

Did you get get the latest [edit] CREATIVE drivers also? They have EAX 4.0 now, and a few fixes. It came out last month too (I gave the link to Kinney when he was having his COD issues). If he pops in after the Holidays he'd probably be able to help you, as he seems to play it quite alot (I gave up after the demo didn't impress, but I have heard alot of good things about the Multiplayer [which may change my mind]). The most fun thing for me was applying shader effects to the demo, especially Sketch, Ascii gets you killed so fast!

Maybe I missed it, but did you get rid of the Nvidia drivers that you had before like everyone suggested?

Also, it's usually a lot easier to just do a fresh install of windows when you get a new videocard. That way you have a clean slate and get full performance. I keep my windows partition small for this reason.

I got a small windows partition myself, just never know these days when you have to wipe it out. Either way, its still a time-consuming process and I though I wipped all that Nvidia crap but appearantly there still maybe some so I will use that cleaner tonight. Id bet a system dump may fix this but not worth it over one game which is making me believe that this is a conflict with COD and the Radeon still.

I did a fresh install the other day and it took 30 min, 2 of which I had to be present at the computer.

It's easier that way.

No biggie there but updating the OS and installing Norton with all the updates and MS office is the timely part.

Oops, im sorry. The strange thing is that I know three people with Radeons that run this game patch-less (We played at a LAN party and they installed it there) and had no problems whatsoever. I was unaware that this was a known problem. Nonetheless it might be better to do a reformat anyway since you have a windows partition, just to be sure. Atleast then you can come back and tell us you told us so!

I always reformat when I upgrade my GFX card, simply because it provides a good excuse to do something I would have had to do later on anyway. Some people get so wound up about wiping everything, and then they attempt to keep an install for several upgrades, which just screws everything up. As long as you keep backups everything is fine, in my case I have a seperate partition for all of my documents, drivers and any programs that I've downloaded from the net, that way an install is very easy.

yea totally

i hate it when people call in saying "um, my computers slow"

im like "what O/S are you using?"

"winME"

"how long have you had it installed for?"

"oh about two years, why?"

at this point is usually where i scream and call them bad names

Ok I just found out last month nvidia released new nforce2 drivers so I will try that out and see what happens. Im pretty confident that this is a software issue and it just depends on how much of pain in the a$$ CoD wants to be. If I was experincing overload issues then the ti 4600 I had on this machine would have been worse.

My gripe is that I have swapped AGP cards between nVidia and ATI all the time and never had a problem till on this rig and with only CoD. Ill keep in touch.

Well I finally was able to catch the bug that was hosing the CoD. I was decoding the nforce 2 drivers on my rig and found out that the AGP driver was somewat off specs, just enough I guess to hose CoD. So I got the updated nforce 2 drivers and installed them but still no go. The driver was updated but the glitch was still there. I totally removed the drivers, rebooted with the standard ones and reinstalled with the new ones and THE DAMNED GLITCH WAS STILL THERE!!!!

After a 20 mins of letting out enough profanity to guarantee me a spot in hell, I decided to dump my windows partition and reinstall and install ONLY the lastest drivers. This time the glitch was gone was able to play CoD for hours and no crashes. Never had this problem before and have been swapping AGPs on this rig many times lately so in this case the old universal solution to all software problems never hit me but I do thank you all for reminding me of the basics.

Glad to hear you found the problem. Good Job!
I'll probably link this thread in a future post when someone has a similar problem.

Enjoy COD! Try the shader effect too, Sketch looks AWESOME w/COD, Stylized B&W's not bad either, but ASCII messes up the view IMO.
