Just wondering if someone could help me in explaning about camera Lenses,
I'm thinking of buying a Nikon D70 which comes with a 18-70mm lens also you
can get a 70-300mm lens its all very confusing could some explain what these
measurements mean and what each lens is used for, I think its to do with
Zoom etc, but not sure.

Also what kind of lens would I need for macro photography ??

A answer would be nice or a pointer to some resource. Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

The lens measurement in mm, usually refers to the focal length, which is,
the distance at which the lens projects a clear image. The longer the
distance, the less of the field of vision it sees, but the image appears
LARGER or CLOSER with more detail. This is genrally called a 'Telephoto
lens'. Digital camers have somewhat different specs to film cameras, but
they generally use an 'equivalent' lens measurement.

The standard 35mm SLR film camera, has a 50mm lens. Thus a 100mm lens is a
'telephoto'. In digital technology, this would be a zoom ration of x 2. A
200mm lens thus would have a zoom ration of 4x.

But things get complex as, compact 35mm film cameras with fixed lenses (that
is, not interchangeable ones) began to appear with 35 mm or 38 mm lenses,
that in conventional 35mm cams would would be conisdered mini-wide angle
(true wide-angle is around 28mm). So, a compact cam with a 35 to 70mm lens,
has a zoom ration of x 2, but this does not bring the image as close as the
50mm lens at x2. Digi cams follow these specs. So a 35-105 mm equivalent
zoom has a ration of x3, or 3:1. But would not bring the image as close as
a true 35mm film camera with a 150mm telephoto lens.

Ahh, I fear I have talked rubbish!

Hope you undertand some of it.

I'm begining to think my high school should have taught me the "New
Math" ;-) I think I understand the meanings of the number.

My camera has 36mm to 144mm so it has 4x optical zoom and is
comparable to fixed focal camera to about 3x of standard 35mm camera.

Yep, right! (that is, a standard 50mm lens camera)

So is a 18-70mm lens better than a 28-80mm as they are charging more for the
18-70mm kit and could someone explain why??????? please.

The 18-70 will be able to get a wider angle (i.e. zoomed out) than the
28-80, but it won't be able to zoom in as much as the 28-80. From the way
prices are, it seems as if it's harder to zoom out than zoom in. For macro
photography you would want a macro lense: something which can focus on an
object very close to it. From the info given, there is no way to tell which
is better.

28mm is considered to be standard wide-angle. 18mm is extreme and would cost
more for more critical optics.
