I am running XP Pro.
Don't know if this is the right spot for this or not but here
goes...........
Up until recently, when I plugged my camera (Olympus 380) into the USB, the
computer would recognize it, and a wizard would come up, allowing me to name
and download the pics.
Recently however, the computer beeps, but no wizard comes up. When I
manually open the Wizard (under accessories) it still fails to recognize the
camera. But, when I use 'My Computer'it recognizes the camera, and I can
download the pictures. The problem with this is that I have to manually
rename every picture, which is time consuming.
Any thoughts?

Do this
Start, run, type
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
There is a space between the 2 and s.

I tried that, still no result, either automatically, or manually.

Have you checked for updated drivers at the Olympus website, have you
checked their site's tech support and tech papers with regard to this issue?

I did check for updated drivers on their website, but didn't check with tech
support. I will do that, but thought it possibly had something to do with XP
workings, as nothing had changed with the camera.

As you install various updates the operating environment changes even if the
update is simply a driver for some other hardware device. Hence, the need
for other devices to be updated as a result. You may only need to remove
and reinstall the current drivers for the camera. On the other hand, you
may find information at the manufacturer's website that either pertains to
conflicts between your camera and some other device you have or drivers for
that device or perhaps an issue with the OS.

It should also be noted, it is the responsibility of the device manufacturer
to support their device as the OS is updated or to compensate for other
changes of which they become aware as well. It would be impossible for that
to be done on the OS side. For one, while updates are tested, there's
simply no way for updates to be tested against every possible combination of
hardware and software. Second, even a small change made to address an issue
with a specific hardware device unless it applied to all systems and setups
would ripple across the entire install base. When a hardware manufacturer
releases updates specific to its device, such updates only effect your
system.
