The other day was using my windows 10 PC when suddenly I got a BSOD. When I rebooted, I got a message saying ‘Windows failed to start due to recent hardware or software changes’ and the error code ‘0xc0000185’. Via a USB Media Installation Tool I’ve tried restoring to an earlier date, automatic repair, chkdsk and fix mbr but nothing worked. I’ve also looked for loose connections inside my PC but everything seems to be connected fine. It seems like the only other thing I could try is to reinstall windows but I want that to be a last resort. Anybody know how to solve my problem? Thanks :)

sounds like can be two issues..one is a cmos battery or cmos failure where the hardware settings are not right. in the bios make sure the data and time and settings are right. if they are then you may have a hardware failure. if the gpu looks to be locked in...reseat it.. if there no change and your mb has onboard video pull the gpu see if anything changes. pull or swap the ram. also unplug all usb devices start with keyboard first...see if one of them went bad.

I can’t find a reply option on the mobile version of toms hardware but if you’re seeing this thanks for the reply. All the data was correct in the BIOS. I tried reseating gpu, trying one ram stick at a time, and unplugging usb devices but nothing worked, so I decided I would just try reinstalling windows. However, when I selected my SSD to install the os on it said “we failed to create a partition” so in cmd I put in “DISKPART” then “LIST DISK” and it comes up comes up with 3 disks, my SSD, HDD and USB stick, but for the SSD it says “size 0 B”. Does this mean the problem might be with my SSD? Thanks.

I’ve just realised I’ve made a very stupid mistake... the BIOS doesn’t detect the SSD, it was the DVD drive I was looking at. I tried plugging different power and SATA cables into the SSD but I still didn’t see it in the BIOS. Is there any other reasons why the BIOS doesn’t detect it or is it just dead?
