Can 2 routers in seperate networks communicate?

We own 2 houses that are next to each other (within WiFi distance). Each house has its own internet consisting of separate modems with attached routers. Is it possible to have these 2 routers communicate so I can easily access files across both houses? As an example, I would love to be able to do a (Microsoft) remote desktop connection. I know I can use VPN or other remote desktop connection options, but am curious if I can directly have the 2 routers communicate. Any advice appreciated.

There is no simple way to accomplish that without doing crazy stuff like bridging the networks together and using a single subnet and then manually setting the gateways on your end devices.

To really do this you would need a device that was actually a router, the boxes you buy in the retail store are best called gateways because they are missing many of the abilities that let you deal with different subsets and different networks.
