For a system using a single reference clocked Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 28 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

You may find power supplies on the market that supply more than enough Wattage to run the system. However, some of them lack Sufficient Amperage capacity on the critical +12 Volt rail, which is necessary to properly power the critical components in the system (i.e. CPU and GPUs). This is the reason why graphics card manufacturers may overstate the power supply wattage, usually by at least 50 Watts, in an attempt to take into account some of those power supplies that have the weaker +12 Volt rail(s).

Example:

The Corsair Builder Series CX500 ( SKU# 75-001667 / CP-9020047 ), with its maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 38 Amps and with two (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors, is more than sufficient to power your system configuration with a single Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition graphics card.

Also, it is always best if you get a little too much power, if you plan on getting more HDDs, SSDs, fans or a new CPU cooler or even upgrading in the future, then it would be nice if you didn't need to get a new PSU.

With no overclocking you're looking at a 220-230 watt max DC load, that is running Prime 95 and Furmark or OCCT PSU, any good quality 450 watt power supply with dual pcie connectors would do
HD's, have to add a few before it matters
SSD's are about meaningless as far as power consumption, unless you were to add a half dozen or so
CPU aircoolers are also pretty meaningless, 3 or 4 watts for a fan, 6-8 for 2, unless you like using Delta screamers

Easily? I disagree. It depends on the effiency of the PSU, not only the watt number.

The only "futureproofing" you can do is to get a great PSU and a nice case. So why not get a great PSU now, so he don't need to buy another one in a year or so, if he would like to upgrade?

Then you should mention it, just saying that a 500 watt PSU can power a system of this caliber is wrong. Then it comes to the quality, not all 12v lives up to its specs, so you have you be cautious of what you buy.

If you reread my post you'll see that I stated that a "good quality" 450 watt psu would do, you won't find any of the regulars reccomending Raidmax or the like
