Can 8X AGP card work in 4X AGP motherboard?

I mistakenly bought a new 8X AGP (Visiontek ATI X1950), installed in it and realized that my motherboard only accepts up to 4X. I can't take it back because the product is opened. Are 8X cards backwards compatible with 4X motherboards?

Yes, unless it is a very old 4X motherboard using incorrect voltage.

The system is 2 years old, so the motherboard is hopefully not the improper voltage. It is most likely a power issue to the card - I will go get a larger power supply to see that remidies the problem.

what mobo is it??? It should work fine.

Also if your gonna get a new psu, I would suggest you get atleast 400W with around 30amps on the +12V rail.

I did not realize you had an "issue". You mean the card is in but it is not working? What are the symptoms?

And yes, a 2-year old motherboard should have a 1.5V AGP. That's fine. If you have a Dell or some such, your PSU is 300W. Get a 500-550W PSU then.

You may still continue to have problems though. There is a suspicion that the current batch of X1950 PRO AGPs is using faulty digital voltage regulators which cause crashes and lockups.

I have an 8x card in my 4 year old mobo. (that only accepts 4x)
you shouldnt have an issue.

most likely a dodgy card.

My card ( x1600 agp x8 ) doesnt work on my other pc that support only 4X. Fan work but i got no screen, its pretty old comp tough, Dell precision 530 (2001-2002)
