Im planning on upgrading my GT 1030 to a GTX 1050 TI LP for my dell optiplex 7010 DT and i wanted to know if i can safely run it on a 250W psu or do i need to upgrade the psu to something a little more powerful. If so is it safe to run a external PSU as i dont know any that would fit in the case.

current specs

I5-3740
16gb ram
1TB HDD
GT 1030
250W PSU

Solution
Recommended PSU wattage for the GPU is 300 watts.

And for any build you need a good quality highly rated PSU. 600 watts is probably going to be necessary overall.

You should not need to have an external PSU - are you putting together a mining rig? Motherboard and case?

Use the calculators to size the PSU and allow room for growth. I generally use about 20% more.

Just remember that when the new PSU is installed do not mix and match power cables with the old PSU or other PSUs for that matter.

If PSU is a good quality like Antec cooler master or at least or more than 80% efficiency then you dont have to worry about any thing 1050ti draws power from the board (75 W )
cpu takes 51w if core i3 65 w if core i5
if u have ssd then - 2.5 w 6.5- 9 w if u have a HDD
dvd drive would be similar to HDD
ram sticks are below 2w
so you can see those are the basic components you can see total wattage would be below 160w when u include case fans
so you can safely run 1050ti with 250 w PSU but make sure its a decent brand high efficiency 80+ .

I am pretty sure that the optiplex doesn't run a standard atx power supply. You will want to verify beforehand. Typically you can get one to work, if you are creative, but the OEM guys really like to mess with plug and screw positions.

OP has a Dell PC that comes in 99.9% with proprietary PSU.
Cooler master has mostly crap PSUs.
Efficiency has nothing to do with quality.
PSUs do degrade with time so you can't trust a 10+ years PSU to power a system reliably.

cant do a case swap because the motherboard wont work with it. its gonna be mostly used for gaming. the issue is that a normal atx psu might not fit unless someone knows of one that would work

I'm with this, think you're fine. Regardless of brand names used, which is not what it is about here.

My i5-3470 with GTX1050 was drawing around 200W peak including the monitor and a couple of accessories according to my UPS, so a true 250W PSU should be perfectly fine. AFAIK, Dell uses mostly decent quality PSUs in their pre-built, though even good quality PSUs can be on their way out after ~10 years depending on operating conditions.

so it should be fine right? as i dont have the money to replace everything if the psu decides to nuke my pc.

The only way to know for sure would be to hook it up to a PSU load tester and an oscilloscope to see how well it holds up during stress-testing at 50-80% load.

If it were me, I'd open the PSU to see if its capacitors may be in need of replacement. I do not believe any of my PSUs have made it to 10 years without at least one repair.

The best thing to do would be to take a picture of the chart on the side of the PSU, so we can actually determine exactly what 250W PSU Dell has stuck in there. You're getting a lot of different answers because the information about the PSU you've provided is scant except for 250W. I'll never make any recommendation without knowing exactly what PSU I'm dealing with.

The 1050Ti LP is slot-powered, so it shouldn't/can't draw > 75W***
****make sure your x16 slot can actually supply 75W. I've seen a lot of SFF OEM machines that are limited to 30-40W from the x16 slot.

That PSU is 210W effective (12V * 17.6A)

I wouldn't imagine an i5-3470 to draw more than...75W. Still need some PSU headroom for accessories (storage, mobo, etc). Also, a bit of headroom for wattage spikes can prevent random crashes.
