Can a 3 pin fan work using a 4 pin header on a motherboard.

Hi. I was wondering if a 3 pin system fan would work on a 4 pin header on the motherboard?
I'm aware that a 4 pin fan has the ability to have speed control but I'm not that bothered about controlling fan speeds.
