I'm in a situation where I have to transfer my 2.5 TB of music and keep it on my laptop to sort.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 5547 came with 1 TB HD.

Runs a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit.

But that 1 TB is not enough and can't use a external.

Will a 4 TB be able to work on my laptop?
The hard drive that came with my laptop is a Seagate 1 TB 2.5"

I mean as long as it's 2.5" form factor and it fits well then I assume maybe correct me if I am wrong. It's just empty space. I even upgraded the memory to 16 GB max that's how high the laptop can go for me.

Re updated I don't need a 4 TB just 3 TB is enough for me.

The mm are all standard sizes. You just happen to be looking for a capacity that doesn't fit within the standard 9.5mm or smaller that most laptops accommodate internally, and have stated that external is not an option. Manufactures would love to accommodate your needs and earn more money, but it's not physically practical in a spinning platter HDD right now, and may never be unless new technology can be leveraged to allow higher density platters in the smaller form factor.

SSDs come in thinner profiles, but the cost is mostly prohibitive.

Most folks who need that much portable capacity are also willing to live with portable external storage.
You can get 4 TB 2.5" form factor drives, but you need to be aware that they are usually 15mm tall, rather than the 9.5mm and shorter that most laptop hard drives are.

Before you order one, measure the space you have available. Most likely, it won't fit.

If you really need that much space, I would reconsider the reasons you can't use external storage, which you haven't mentioned.

A multi-terabyte ssd should fit, but the prices are likely not what you're budgeting for.

At least 3 TB should be enough. I formatted a 2 TB before and it worked well with out any problems.

Seagate Laptop Thin ST3000LM016 3 TB 2.5" Internal Hard Drive should be more then enough for me.

Thats a 15mm thick drive , it mite not fit . your best option is 2 Terabyte harddisk. nothing more ..

You're not going to find a spinning platter hard drive over 2 TB in the 9.5mm height. 2.5" platter density just isn't high enough and the market for those types of drives is not highly profitable for HDD manufacturers to pursue. Before you proceed, you should verify you can cram a 15mm drive into your laptop.

Also, the same deal applies for multi-terabyte SSDs. Some are 15mm in height, so you need to verify before purchase.

Very true I always paid attention to the 2.5" only never went about the MM measurements checked the specs and it does not match sigh thanks though.

you can increase the storage using SD cards ... get 1/2 Tera one ...

Wish the MM were all standard size but that;s never gonna happen oh well. thanks for the info.
