Yes, but an AM3+ CPU won't fit in an AM3 socket.

yup, usually. there have been a few cases where you can remove 1 pin off the cpu and change the bios a bit and it will work in an am3 mobo, but AMD wont confirm it. what mobo and cpu are you getting?
