Can a AM3+ GPU fit in motherboard that supports FM1?

I'm trying to get a Radeon HD 7870 into my FM1 motherboard. My current CPU requires FM1, so a new motherboard would require a new CPU too?

A 7870 can fit in any board that has a PCIe x16 slot. What's your current CPU and motherboard?

Something mixed up here! The CPU has nothing to do with the video card. Although the FM1 cpu has a build in video card, you can add a dedicated card to the pci-e slot. The one in the cpu will be disabled automatically when the dedicated card is detected.
