Can a better CPU greatly increase my Frames per/s when gaming?

Hello!

So i'll just go ahead and say that I don't know too much about computers so bare with me. I am just wondering if I get a new processor will my FPS increase? The games I intend to play are battlefield 3/4, crysis 2/3, planet side 2, etc. So far the frame rate is around 30-40 but it can drop to 10-20 in crowded areas online (especially planet side 2). I just upgraded from a nvidia quadro 2000 to a gtx 760 too and although my graphics performance have increased significantly, I still get bottlenecked from time to time. Will a better CPU help run things much smoother? Is that the ultimate solution to my low FPS? Please help! I wish to play games without it being a slide show. Thank you!

My rig: HP Z400 workstation

Windows 7 64bit

6G RAM

Intel Xeon W3503

EVGA GTX 760 2G SC

Solution
The Xeon W3503 is a relatively slow processor, at 2.4Ghz. So a CPU upgrade would give you quite a bit better experience, as the GPU is relatively tied to how fast the CPU can push data. Take a look at an i5 or even an i7, depending on your budget. And it depends a bit on the game your running, modern games require more and more CPU cores/power.

Cheers

An SSD will not improve your FPS in a game.... at least not at the level you are trying to achieve. A higher clocked CPU would help the most at this point. The 6GB of system RAM is fine also, and likely not limiting your performance either.

That wouldn't help his fps issue at all. Faster load times, but not faster fps. And 6GB is plenty for games right now.

A good idea would be to upgrade your processor to something like a i5 or i7. I'd recommend the i7 if you do things like video editing also. The i5 has a great price/performance ratio for gaming. You'd probably see better performance in Planetside 2 with an i7 but I doubt there would be a big difference in other games. Hope this helps.

The W3503 is only a 2.4GHz dual-core CPU which is indeed somewhat borderline for the more CPU-intensive modern titles.

Since you have a prebuilt HP computer, your upgrade options on it are likely severely limited so you will most likely need to upgrade the motherboard as well.

Something like an i5-4570 with a h87 motherboard should give you a fairly noticeable boost: ~70% faster cores and twice as many of 'em.

in your case.. you need a better CPU as the GPU is powerfull itself... you CPU is holding it back... also try and get 8 gigs of RAM(total)... however you will also need to change the mobo if you go for an "i5 or i7"...

I think the motherboard is fine, All I know is that it is an intel MB and I was planning on getting intel processors anyways.

Intel changes sockets nearly every other generation. Your Xeon appears to be of LGA1366 vintage - the only Intel socket with triple-channel memory support. Since then, there has been LGA1156, LGA1155 and the current LGA1150. There is also LGA2011 for high-end desktop/server CPUs with quad-channel RAM.

There are two reasons why I said your upgrade options on your current motherboard are limited:
1- no modern CPU will mechanically nor electrically fit on it and
2- most OEM motherboards have severely restricted CPU support list in their BIOS, often limited to whatever models the vendor originally offered as configuration options or model variants
