Can a CPU die?

So I've moved quite a bit and eventually my desktop took too much and the motherboard just died. Now I'm away at school and my dad has my computer. He took it to an IT guy and the IT guy said the computer mobo is only dead, but he wasn't sure about the CPU. I built the PC and it lasted close to 6 years which I'm proud of and I feel like I could've squeezed out 2, maybe 3 years. However this is speculation. Here's the real question.

Can a CPU stop working after getting too old? I've read no, but I want to make sure. If it is a possibility I want to know what tests are there to see if the CPU is okay. Don't really want to spend $200 for something that wasn't even broken in the first place.

Thanks!

CPUs can be affected by electron migration, which can gradually wear down the circuits. This shouldn't be an issue with stock settings and within safe operating temperatures, however. That being said, I wouldn't count on a CPU burning out just because of a dead motherboard, although some might.
Generally, a CPU will last much longer than a motherboard and the chances of one dying of 'old age' is relatively slim.

However, it is possible that whatever killed your motherboard could have zapped the CPU. For example, if static shock or a short circuit caused your motherboard to fail, there is a fairly good chance it could have taken your CPU down with it.

Hopefully not though! Only way to check is to use the same CPU in another motherboard (with the same socket of course) and see if it lives.

Makes sense. Yeah when I go back home for Thanksgiving break my new parts will be there. I have an Intel i7 2600k and I'm actually buying a ASRock H97M-ITX. That will work right?

I've decided to rebuild my full tower gaming computer into a micro desktop gaming computer. I having full sized desktop and it is SUCH a hassle. Plus I'll be traveling quite a bit since I'll be moving.

What do you guys think of:
-Fractal Design Core 1500
-ASRock H97M
-Seasonic S12II 620w

Those are the parts I'm probably going to buy. I'm not as hardcore as I use to be when I gamed.

I was able to salvage:
-1 tb HDD
-2 tb HDD
-250gb SSD
-Bluray
-R9 290
-Intel i7 2600k
-2 Corsair Dominators 4gb
-Floppy Bay 3.0 USB (not sure if the ASRock has a 20 pin for it =/ can anyone confirm?)

Well shoot... what mobo would you guys recommend?

There usually is not a lot to choose from when you're shopping for old motherboards.
You have to look for chipsets h61,b65,h67,z67,b75,h77,z77. Series 7 support USB3 natively - so it's a bonus.

Your previous choice was asrock mini-itx board. Similar one that would support your CPU would be Asrock H77M-ITX

Any good Mobo having the LGA1155 socket shall do the job but if you are asking for a name, I would say the AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 can be a worthy replacement. Take a look at the specs yourself http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77 Extreme4/

Looks like the only mobo that's available is the ASUS P8H61-I R2.0 LGA 1155 Intel H61. What do you guys think? Good?

I have never had a CPU die. However, if you tried putting it in a wrong socket or in a bad motherboard, it could go up in smoke. I still have a fully functioning Intel 386DX which outlasted its motherboard, which died from leaking battery acid. As for your motherboard, yes, that motherboard will work. You may be able to overclock on this motherboard, but I don't know for sure.

I see yeah then in that case it seems like my CPU is fine in that case then.

I see, but OC isn't necessary I think.

I've looked into it, however it seems like all of the shops are out of stock.

It might be very hard to find a new motherbaord for the i7 2600k, maybe second hand? It's a shame, because in my opinion the i7 2600k is still a very good cpu and should still last some years. If you can't find a motherboard for it, you might want to sell it and buy a newer cpu and motherboard. But first try to search for a second hand one if you don't mind.

🙁 Too bad man. Finding parts for LGA 1155 compatible processor is going to be tough, given the rate at which we move on to newer parts.

I did manage to find a few used motherboards of the same type on ebay and thought you might want to take a look :

Will scout for more when free and let you know if anything comes across.

Agreed the 2600k is still very good. Yeah I may do that, however like you said I'll keep looking for some good ones that're still selling.

Thanks! I'll check out the ones on eBay. Is it safe to buy used though?

Also, I don't think the mobo will fit in my case now that I look at it. I've been doing some more research and found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-motherboard-Intel-B75-LGA1155-Micro-ATX-GA-B75M-D3H-A-Rev1-2-New/172329285198?_trksid=p2045573.c100505.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555014%26algo%3DPL.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150817211623%26meid%3D66316c590b694c12b529d027ee44312d%26pid%3D100505%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26

What do you guys think?
