Can a faulty hard drive damage other components?

About 4 months ago I started having problems with my PC. Sometimes it would freeze up or become extremely slow, sometimes lasting up to 5 minutes. I later found out by looking into windows task manager that my HDD would suddenly spike up to 100% usage every now and then. So I took it to my local PC service store and asked if it could be a faulty hard drive. They told me they can't know for sure and just recommended that I install a second drive (SSD - 240GB) and make that the primary drive. They said to leave the HDD in and just use it as a secondary drive for storing large files. So I did that and my PC has been fine for about 1 month now but a few days ago I noticed that my HDD has started making a slight screeching noise. The screeching noise is very quiet but it's noticeable if you put your ear up to the computer. It lasts about <5 seconds and happens about every 5-10 seconds.

I'm guessing that the HDD is probably on it's way out but my main concern is that it may damage other parts. I really don't care if the HDD fails because I have all the files backed up and I can easily replace it. I'm just worried that if it fails it could damage the motherboard or other components. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated. P.S. the HDD is Toshiba, it has 2TB storage and is about 3-4 years old.

Solution
Everything looks good as far as the SMART Status but Toshiba drives are the worst. I always stay away from them. We are a dell reseller and for a while they were giving Toshiba drives in their Dell Optiplexs. We swapped them out for Seagate/WDs lol

I should try this.

Download HDTune and have it do a full surface scan. This will at least let you know if the read/write heads are crashing and causing any physical damage but that would show up on the SMART Status.

Maybe try another SATA/Power connector as well even though I have only had one case ever where that actually fixed something lol

Wow...Can't know for sure? What a LOAD OF BULL!!!!

Download Crystal Disk Info and run it. If it says Caution, which it may, then you probably have a bad drive. If it does copy and paste what it says here.

if it says it is good it can still be going back. I would till copy and paste it here. It could be having a lot of read failures which indicate a failing read/write head on the HDD usually

Hi, I downloaded Crystal Disk Info and it says my health status is good. Unfortunately I can't copy and paste the info (won't let me highlight) so I've just taken a screenshot which you can see below. Also, if the hard drive does happen to be faulty, can it damage other components in my computer? That's mainly what I'm worried about. Thanks for help.

My bad, attached screenshot didn't show for some reason. Anyway here's the info. The Toshiba (1st drive) is the one I'm having issues with. Good to know it can't damage anything else.

Alright thanks a lot for the help mate. I'm guessing the Toshiba is just a bad quality hard drive which would explain why it's sometimes very slow. For now I won't bother doing much more unless the hard drive gets worse. Both drives are backed up so it won't matter if either of them fails. Cheers!
