Yes.

The type of GPU memory is entirely separate from the type of motherboard RAM.

We're going to need a whole lot more than "doesn't work". What specifically doesn't work. Does your system support and is currently running in UEFI mode? Newer cards require that that be the case. A MB old enough to be running DDR2 is unlikely to be compatible.
