Hey guys,

So recently I got a new radeon r9 280 GPU to replace my 4 year old gtx 590. After installing it came up with no display.

I took it to my local pc repair store and after testing stuff for an hour he said that the new graphics card is too advanced for the motherboard (which is about 4 years old).

My question just is; is this actually possible, or is he just making something up because he cant find the problem?

I have found no reference to this in all my forum lurking which is why I ask.

Thanks people.

He is blowing smoke out his arse. PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible with every older iteration. What may be causing the issue is that newer video cards require a higher PCI-E bus speed that your motherboard might not be able to handle or more wattage then provided.

Do you know the name and model of your motherboard? PSU information as well.

Hey, my motherboard I believe is an intel DH6GD desktop motherboard (as i said about 4 years old)
my PSU is a Hipro ATX 630W

It is worth noting that the card is PCI-E 3.0 and the motherboard is PCI-E 2.0

PCIE 3.0 is backwards compatible, and your 2.0 slot is more than enough for that card.

You either need to update the bios or the power supply is most likely the issue.

Test your system with a quality unit, hipro are known for very poor quality control.

I will try both of these things thank you. I will start with the bios then try get a new PSU, do you have any recommendations for a PSU brand and model that isn't too expensive but will be able to use this graphics card?
