Can a GTX 1050 run without a 6 pin even if it has the slot?

Solution
if the card requires a 6 or 8 pin from the psu you have to use it - for the most part its required because the card exceeds the 75w needed from the pci-e slot [ pci-e slot = 75w -- 6- pin psu = 75w --- 8 pin psu = 150w of supplied power]

if you don't have that get the 1050 cards that don't require one [like the shorty cards I linked above ] or replace your psu with one that's supports higher end cards with needed 6 /8 pin pci-e connectors ..

How do you know/look for a 1050 without a factory overclock?

You have to remember there is a 1050 and a 1050 Ti. You mentioned the 1050 in your post subject line but the link provided is to the 1050 Ti. In addition according to what I can find it only needs the 75 w coming from the PCIe slot however each manufacture might do things different and provide an additional pin set for additional power. So it really comes down to who you plan to buy from.

Look at the pictures or read the spec sheet for the GPU you want to buy, it will mention if it needs a 6-pin connector or not.

The 6-pin is only needed for getting higher overclocks on the GPUs, and isn't necessary for OCing even. I OC'd my 750ti by about 25% without it having a 6-pin.

They're similar enough right? Like both of them don't need a 6 pin if not factory over clocked

Yes as long as you're not getting a factory overclocked version 75w should be sufficient. If there's a particular model you are considering to purchase please provide the link and we can give you a more concrete answer.

heres the deal a reference 1050 is a 75w card pci-e slot is 75w of power so if you were to exceed that your card can fail to work proper

now will it work with out ? maybe will it run at full power with out stable ? I doubt it .. they just did not put the extra power supplied to the card from a 6-pin just for the fun of it .

these shorty cards you linked may not even come with any 6-pin

http://www.legitreviews.com/geforce-gtx-1050-ti-video-card-roundup-evga-msi-zotac_187659#hTSzK3ruKOZiYz5L.99

like this card does not need a 6 pin connector so it will work fine just off the pci-e slot power

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-6150-KR

this evga 1050 does require a 6-pin connector to work

http://www.evga.com/products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=ae9787d6-01f1-4ace-81eb-79dd29664663

bottom line is if the card has a 6 or 8 pin plug built on it you do have to use it or the card may fail to work

Can i use the MSI GTX 1050ti Gaming X 4GB GDDR5 without the 6 pin?

so you see 75w from the slot and 75w from the 6-pin = 150w the card needs to work
