Question can a HDD/SSD fit in any motherboard

I was wondering if it matters what type of HDD/SSD you buy for a motherboard and if any HDD/SSD can work with any motherboard
 
If the motherboard is very old it might only support IDE drives. If it's relatively new it probably won't support IDE drives. Most motherboards in production today only support SATA drives and most drives are SATA nowadays. Depending on the motherboard, you might not be able to use M.2 SSDs, as many do not have an M.2 slot. If it has a SATA port it supports all SATA drives, same for IDE.
