Can a medusa petrify a demon or devil (1st ed.) ?

If the gaze overcomes MR and the demon/devil blows its save, will it
become stone? Can undead, like wraiths and spectres, be petrified?

Its my understanding that if the creature has eyes and is able to meet the gaze, ie is not blind or
otherwise incapacitated then yes, they would be affected. Undead, corporal members of that exclusive
club, should also be affected. Non-corporal undead, as I would guess, don't actually see like we do,
as that they don't have eyes anymore.

Now, still talking 1st edition, what about a Golem?
Could a medusa petrify an iron golem?

According the when we play, Medusa cannot turn Golem into stone. Our
reasoning is that Golem are created as animated, inanimate objects
(doesn't see, think, hear, smell, etc.). It is not living. It is
considered a "robot". The spell to bring Golem into being allows the
spellcaster to will it to do his/her bidding. Now if you take a Flesh
Golem, you might have another issue. Medusa has the ability to turn
flesh into stone so if you take both of these things into consideration,
the best a medusa can do with a Flesh Golem is to change it from a Flesh
Golem into a Stone Golem but it will still be able to move.

The quick answer is that anything that has eyes or the equivalent is subject
to
the attack. Success or fail is determined by a save vs petrifaction unless
immune
to gaze attacks or petrifaction. I didn't find any such immunity in the MM1E
entries.
The Medusa entry in MM1E describes the attack and limits. Moving to the
Golem
or Spectre entries you can see what the results of the gaze attack might be.
Do a little research and you find the answers you need.

Undead being mostly on the negative material plane may have a sort of
immunity and I'd need to spend more than 2 minutes looking things up.
The quick answer is they don't have a physical body on the material plane
buy may become a statue on the negative material plane. You'll have to look
elsewhere to make money selling wraith statues.

For some hypothetical fun, an Iron Golem is turned to stone by a Medusa.
What do you get if a stone to flesh spell is successful? A Flesh Golem? :)
I'm not really looking for an answer. Something to think about for a
strange encounter though.

The way I was looking at it was anything with physical eyes and
intelligence above zero should be affected by the medusa,if she can
see them, based on the MM1 description.
The first question, dealing with fiendish things, is that I tend to
think of them as concentrated belief, so even though they have eyes
and intelligence I never really thought of them as having a
functioning system of organs, etc... to be affected. I figure Moses
was the only person who can turn belief into stone. Drum roll
please....
I would have no problem with a ghast being petrified. It has eyes and
(low) intelligence, sort of like a man eating cow. The reason I asked
about non corp undead is that a medusa can SEE them, but can you
really turn a ghost to stone?
No eyes, no body, but they do have intelligence. In the end, I more
wanted input from other folks than to actually deal with my own
twisted logic.
As for the golem, thats probably another thread worth of questions.

I wouldn't let a non-flesh creature be petrified. After all,
it's duplicates the flesh to stone spell.
