Can a motherboard be damaged if you plugged in a atx cable the wrong way.

I've been having a large amount of problems with my build which is a

Intel core i5-3570k
ASROCK Z77 Extreme3 LGA 1155
amd 7990
8 gb DDR3 ram
Corsair 1200w Gold Professional Edition.

In the beginning of my build I made an extremely stupid mistake and put the the 4&2 pin connector leading from my 7990 to my psu, the other way around. The ATX side was connected to the card and the other PCIE side was connected to the psu. I repeatably tried to turn on my computer to no avail and it would sort of "whirl" up for half a second and die. Could this have damaged any part on my computer such as the motherboard?

For some reason I can't use my amd 7990 and get immediate crashes after I even try to start playing any game (I've tried a few). I thought it was a Card issue but I ask for a replacement and no dice.

The weird thing is I can play games with onboard graphics if i remove the card and I even tried a 5850 for a moment which it definitely worked. Before I was able to run my computer with 144hz and watch HD videos and movies with the 7990 in my computer but now it seems to have stopped displaying anything.

Well thats the thing I didn't use any muscle they just slide in because both sides of the connector are practically identical plugs except one if 6&2 PCIE while other an 8 pin atx connector. Which I admit is dumb but I just put it in and the psu decided to not power the system. I repeatedly tried to turn on the pc aswell but when I figured out the problem I'm not sure of the damage was already done.

Let me reiterate however, I'm talking about two 6&2 pin connector that I plug in the wrong way to the psu and gpu. I'm not sure if this could have damaged the mobo because I repeatedly tried to turn on the system and have it repeatedly whirl up and die. My system is working now even with the 7990 in it, just games will cause BSOD.
