Hey guys, I was planning on buying a new motherboard for my gaming PC, I currently have an ASUS B85M-G motherboard and a 4th Gen I7-4770 @ 3.40GHz, they work fine but I need to upgrade them, first I was planning on upgrading my motherboard to a MSI-H110M Gaming Motherboard and was wondering if this new motherboard would be compatible with my older CPU, Or would i need to upgrade my CPU as well, if I was to buy this motherboard? Also if I need to, any suggestions for a new CPU (Under $600) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam. The motherboard MSI-H110M would support 6th Gen. & 7th Gen.(If the BIOS were the latest version) only. So you may have to upgrade the CPU as well if you are going with the H110M. Otherwise you can choose motherboards that support 4th Gen. CPU's so that you don't have to upgrade the CPU.

Your current mobo/cpu is lga1150. The H110 is lga1151, newer generation. Not compatible in any way. To keep the 4770, the mobo's will be b85/87, h87/97 or z87/97. The h/z boards have more to offer as far as better audio, lan, USB support, fan headers etc, but really aren't much of an upgrade as such unless that's what you are needing.
A real upgrade would entail a move to lga1151, skylake and kabylake cpus, 6 and 7 generation, but you'd still be looking at b/h/Z 100 series or 200 series mobos, basically the same in each class, but better supported.
Once you figure out what cpu you'd be needing, then look for a matching mobo, to do it the other way would limit cpu choices. Just be aware that newer generation lga1151 uses ddr4 ram, so your existing ddr3 ram would also be incompatible with the new motherboard.
