bought a hard drive not knowing it was a sas, so either i can buy a sas controller or a new sata hard drive.

You can work a Sas hdd only with a Sas controller. A Sas HDD will not plug into a Sata backplane, the connection is different.

Your best bet would be to return the HDD and get the sata drive you need.
A used Sas controller is about $50+up and is usually a Raid card.
