Just like the question asks in the title, can a shorted motherboard also short memory and cause it to go bad? I recently got my memory back from an RMA and tested my new memory on my rig just to be greeted with a shorted motherboard that would spin fans for about a millisecond then turn off. I just got a new rig and im afraid to use the ram or my graphics card that i ran on the "shorted motherboard" with the new mobo that i just got. So what do you guys think i should do?? should i try the ram and gpu on the new mobo or what?
also can a shorted mobo also short a hard drive or optical drive and cause them to go bad too?

Let's see if I've got this right. You have a computer that's been running OK, at least you don't say anything to the contrary. You place some RAM into the MB of this rig that was just returned to you from an RMA. The computer fails to start and you want to blame the MB rather than the RAM. Unless there's something you haven't mentioned that doesn't compute. Companies often send out used junk to cover RMAs. Very unlikely it was new.

That is pretty much what happened yeah. If I take all ram out i end up not hearing any sounds or beeps, thats why i'm guessing its the mobo. I also got a psu back from an rma from the same company as the ram. I tested the psu using the paperclip test and the psu fan worked fine.

People seem to not know what shorted means around here.

Short means that something is blocking a circuit path to a necessary location so the necessary information can't be sent and the computer shuts down or stops running. It usually cannot cause something else to fail.

I'd check to make sure only the standoffs you're using are installed, superfluous standoffs can cause shorts, as well as metal/heavy parts on the motherboard like screws and the like.

However I'd suspect the RAM, since that's what you changed.
