Can a Windows 10 key activate Windows 7?

Solution
No, you would need a Windows 7 key.

Why not just use Windows 10, other than preference and some incompatible programs?

If you want Windows 7, buy a Windows 7 key that has either a disk with it or some kind of guarantee that it will work.

Because of my HDD dying and having a new SSD I'm trying to get a new OS on my PC but I would need to flash my BIOS and update drivers because of my incompatible motherboard to actually use Win10 and I'm a bit uncomfortable with the process of doing it.

I am currently running Windows 7 that I suspect to be non-legit because it was installed by an old friend, and I'm confused if cloning it would be of any use. Would rather just clean install Win7 and activate it somehow. Any idea of how I could get a Windows 7 key so I can download the OS from the Microsoft page?

Search the same purchasing sites as for W10 -- for example Amazon.co.uk has loads of W7 versions and keys that should be legitimate compared to many other sources.

edit: and once W7 is activated as legitimate you can still upgrade to W10 free if you want by using one of the "assistive technologies" like the magnifying glass, which I actually use since I have poor vision. HERE is the MS link to do the upgrade if you are interested -- still free.

Thanks a lot.

You can use a win 7 key to upgrade to win 10 still. Once you buy a win 7 key, you have that option. Don't need to use the assistive technologies route.

flashing bios is pretty easy on modern boards and Win 10 is likely to find all the drivers you need once its installed. So that part is not that hard at all.
