can a wireless router be used without internet?

My kids are getting ipods for Christmas.. I don't have internet service, so I was wondering if they can use wifi from a router without internet access

To OP... YES.. you can.. so for instance .. if you had 2 PC.s .. you could network them using the wireless capabilities of the router...
HOWEVER, you say your kids will have iPods.. I would say that they could then share their iTunes libraries.. however..I think that features needs an ITunes account.. which need inet.. to activate at least..
So technically.. yes you can.. but not sure how useful it will be for iPods without iNet..

How you hoping to use the wireless? to do what exactly?

U can understand a router as a device which converts a wired network to wireless network. It just converts & does not produce any network on its own. So as for ur question no is the ans.
Contact some internet service provider(ISP)s, see their plans, see which suits you depending on the speed and your budget, buy a good router, if not already purchased 😉 and enjoy the Christmas😀.

I'm going to say yes, but there are severe restrictions. Ipods are designed to work with internet so wifi without internet will have unpredictable results.
There may be a few things that the ipods can do over a local network (without internet). They may be able to backup/sync to a computer. There may be some apps that can stream media or communicate over a local network. Pretty much everything else, however, such as installing apps and downloading media, will require working internet.

I have a wireless router that does not have an internet connection. We network our PCs and laptops, my smartphone, and printer all together with it. Works great. A wireless router does not need an internet connection in order to function. You can definitely set up a home network with it

However, if you're thinking the WiFi on the router will allow the iPods to access the iTunes store, it won't unless you hook it up to internet.

What exactly are you supposing your kids will be able to do with their iPods? There's not a lot of point in connecting them to a wireless network if that network isn't connected to the Internet. I think they are going to be disappointed with their presents; you may want to consider if there is something more suitable for them.
